Two Medieval Songs by Machaut: Comment qu'a Moy Lonteinne and Douce Dame Jolie performed on Gittern

Two monophonic virelai songs by the 14th century composer Guillame de Machaut: Comment Qu'a Moy Lonteinne and the more famous Douce Dame Jolie. Primary manuscript is Paris, B.N., f.fr. 22546. Douce Dame is found in multiple manuscripts which surprisingly have differences in the B section (I'm surprised because every recording I have heard only plays it one way). I've used two different versions here on the repeat. Performed by Daniel Shoskes on a 5 course medieval gittern built by George Stevens. #gittern #medievalmusic #Machaut #virelai Translations: How far away from me May you be, noble lady Yet in thought night and day By thinking I hold you near For memory brings me back to you So that always without ceasing (I see) your surpassing beauty Your graceful attire I always see without ceasing Sweet, lovely lady for God's sake do not think that any has sovereignty over my heart, but you alone. For always, without treachery Cherished Have I you, and humbly All the days of my life Served Without base thoughts. Alas, I am left begging For hope and relief; For my joy is at its end Without your compassion.
