Kaikhosru Sorabji: Le Jardin Parfumé (Eric Xi Xin Liang)

Recorded on March 12th, 2021 at home. Learned and refined in approximately 38 hours. Listen with headphones for the best experience! (If you have heard this piece before, I recommend looking at the score. If you haven't, I recommend listening to this at night or during some relaxing activity since it's a nocturne, while not looking at the score.) (Also, pardon the visual cuts. They are for removing the few seconds that I take to flip each page.) All movements from Opus Clavicembalisticum I've recorded:    • Kaikhosru Sorabji: Opus Clavicembalis...   All works by Sorabji I've recorded:    • Sorabji Piano Recordings (Eric Xi Xin...   What a unique experience it was to progress through this gorgeous nocturne! This took much longer than I expected to complete, but perhaps I initially underestimated how challenging some of the passages are. Rhythmically, the polyrhythms are so complex that I found it a challenge to play them in a consistent manner while practising. There's basically everything a pianist might fear in a piece here: slow tempo, embellishing runs without strict meter, complex polyrhythms, constant tonal migration, non-obvious melodic phrasing, constant dynamic restraint, 3 - 4 staves, chord and tremolo sequences frequently exceeding (normal) hand span, and the need for necessary tempo manipulation to push the music forward. Truly, this piece is a monster, with some of the above traits not found in Sorabji's piano sonatas and Opus Clavicembalisticum. But I'm very glad to have tackled these challenges and found new strategies for overcoming them. Btw, the purpose of the black and white filter on this video is to thematically accompany the fact that this is a nocturne, a piece to be reminiscent of the night, where the rods in our eyes take over the cones at which we perceive most things in black and white rather than in colour.
