Chichester (Basin Road) Level Crossing, West Sussex

Date filmed: Thursday the 5th of September 2024 Videos filmed between 17:49 and 18:15 Route: West Coastway Line - Chichester (CCH) is the closest station Crossing type: Manually Controlled Barrier crossing with CCTV (MCB-CCTV) Filming location: Basin Road, Chichester (PO19 8PY) A level crossing rather uniquely located next to a bus station and bus maintenance depot in Chichester, West Sussex. It is monitored via CCTV and controlled from a large and impressive signal box at the other end of nearby Chichester Station, and is one of two level crossings just outside of the centre of Chichester located just 90 yards apart - it takes less than a minute to walk between them via an alleyway passing the back of a bus station that runs right beside the railway line. A lot of this level crossing dates back to circa. 2005, some of the barriers are in quite a tired state, and there are as many as four alarms here - though one 'warbles' and is faulty. These alarms are pretty quiet in contrast to the bus station which produces a lot of environmental noise (and video interference). All four corners of the crossing are filmed from in this video, so you can hear each of the four alarms individually throughout. My hour at the Chichester crossings on this dull and drizzly evening (part two to follow on Thursday from somewhere you can easily work out) was started with some interesting traction I was quite pleased to have made it here to see. It came in the form of a test train being worked by a re-purposed Class 153 diesel multiple unit. This video inspection unit was using very high-tech camera equipment to fully examine the state and condition of the rails as it passed, keeping the rails safe as any early warning signs of dangerous defects can be swiftly picked up and reported, and you can see its high-powered light beam shining down at the track. A Gatwick Express unit can also be seen in the following lowering, a common sight on the coastway services due to a stock gap in Southern's fleet. Hope you enjoy these videos!
