Surfcasting at it's best Part 2 - the fishing heats up

My first bait was pillie but with my first fish only taking a few seconds to bite then hook up I decided to start using some Kahawai we had caught the other day. We had cubed it up while fishing on the boat and saved what we hadn't used. We also had a few yellowtail we could cube up. I do like to start with pillie and use it for a while to get that oily bait smell and bring the fish in like it's own little berley after the smaller fish have ripped it apart. I normally switch over to harder baits once I know there is better fish there. This allows the smaller fish to have a bit of a play with it and get some excitement going on, bigger fish love this. The small fish pulling, running with and ripping into a big bait that hangs on a lot longer than a pillie works a treat. Normally the bigger fish sit back and come charging in, bowling the smaller fish out the way and charging off with it. Flicking out a nice big cube of kahawai, I had exactly that going on, fish were nibbling at it before I even sat it in the holder. Even though I had small fish playing with it I knew being a harder bait there would still be plenty left for a bigger fish to grab. The Kotare rattled away which eventually turned into it buckling over, grabbing it out of the holder I struck and was onto my second fish. Once again it wasn't a bad fish, it was just a little panni around 45cm. Second bait second fish, I also decided to let this one go being only lip hooked. Pea also was getting a few nice bites. Looking over after watching my snap swim away Pea was hooked up and hooked up to something a lot better. He also was on the big chunks of kahawai. He said it was just a kahawai but I knew it was a good snapper, he kept teasing me saying it's just a kahawai then just before it came into the shallows his line went slack. We both let out a gasp knowing it was a good snap, but I told him that's what happens when you tease me. We casted out our next baits and waited in anticipation, the fish were here and they were hungry. Pea hooked up again then me, it was 3 baits 3 fish well for Pea 3 baits 2 fish and one drop due to teasing. Both were just small ones that went straight back in the drink, the fun-ness was starting to kick in and we had our next baits out waiting for our next bites. The wind had all but gone and we stood side by side in the glass like water with the little Osprey now on the hard. I had bites already and with a few little knocks making my line slack I knew the fish was biting towards me, I wound and struck and I was on again. Yeah boy the Kotare bent over once again - 4th bait 4th fish. This one not so big being around 37cm and releasing my first couple I decided this one was heading for the bin. Dispatching the fish I looked back only to see Pea's rod buckling over - he was watching me putting the fish away so I had to yell at him - YEP your on..... He was fishing circles so with his rod still twitching away he wound up the slack and his rod stayed buckled, Pea was loving it. This one was a little better, close to 45cm which we also kept. We flicked out our next baits and even though our baits were getting touched instantly we sat our rods in the holders. There were a few smaller fish turning up and sometimes leaving our rods in the holders takes away that urge to strike on the smaller fish. This is why those harder baits are great, we were on slabs of kahawai and cubed yellows which allowed the smaller fish to have a bit of a play and wait for a bigger boy to turn up and have a go. Pea's rod buckled over, the circle hooks were doing their job and he was hooked up. Mid fight I felt something having a play - when you don't have those little bites but you feel your bait being picked up and played with you know a better fish has turned up for you. I struck and the Kotare nodded away giving me the sign I was on too - it was double hook up time!! They were both around 50cm but decided to keep Pea's one with mine going closer to 55cm - one going home and one for the bin.... Already standing in the water I lightly removed my hook and watched my fish slowly swim away - it's great catching fish but sometimes it's even better to watch them swim away. The tide had turned and the little Osprey was back in the water. What an epic few hours we had, a few nice fish in the bin and a few nice fish released - not a bad day off the sand in my books.
