Our first little far north adventure saw us rising at 3am. Having a quick breaky we were in the car and on our way to one of our favourite places to flick a line off the sand. Stevo and I have fished this spot for a good number of years now and it's great that it still produces good fish for us to this day. We were quickly on the beach being only 5mins away from our spot and we soon had our first baits in the water. There was about a 10knt onshore wind in our faces but the great thing at this spot was fishing the low tide you're within a stepping stone to a quick drop off to 12mtrs. It's a nice hole that holds plenty of fish at times. Low was around 4.30am which was perfect for us, most times the fish were gone after an hour's light so we had about 4hrs up our sleeve. Although windy it was a beautiful cloudless morning - there's just something special about casting baits under a moonless starry night sky. It didn't take long for our first bites to come on and once they do they normally bite constantly all the way to light. I hooked up to my first fish just a little after 3.30am. It wasn't a big fish, although take-able at around 35cm I know we can catch better fish than this so I watched him swim back out into the darkness. There were plenty of fish here and in between the smaller rattles we were getting the odd nice hit. My next fish was a lot nicer, fishing into the hole you have to watch the lip when winding your fish in. The fish and sinker gets caught up on it but if you slowly drag it up over it you usually land the fish. Shining my headlamp out into the darkness I could see flashes of white shimmering in the shallows. Sliding him up onto the sand it was a nicey around 45cm, that's a nice fish for off the sand. We've caught some nice fish from here over the years, a few that have hit double figures which we always release. We always try to let the bigger fish go and we set our takeable size to 10lb so anything over that we get a quick pic and try to release. This one was our first binny for the morning and we were hoping for a few more over the next 2-3hrs to keep this one company. I was hooked up again on my next bait, still not big but it was bigger than the last one. Stevo was pretty quiet next to me and I was hoping he to would get onto a few. I told him to change up from the J hook to the mutsu like I was using. When you have good current running like you get in the Harbour these mutsu's work a treat. It was another nice fish which was around 50cm which would definitely keep the other one company. I was also using cubes of kahawai, this was also helping a lot as there were a lot of smaller fish here attacking the baits. I was just letting those smaller fish rattle away at the harder kahawai waiting for the better grabs. Using these harder baits on the mutsu hooks were pretty much hooking up on the better fish every time. This next fish was smaller around 37-38cm so also made its way to the bin. Stevo was still pretty quiet and hooking up to another fish, this one once again felt a lot better. It was another goody like the other 50cm fish I already had in the bin, he was hooked perfectly in the corner of the mouth and although a nice fish to keep I decided to let this one go. You don't always have to keep everything you catch, it's great to keep a couple then let one go and so on. I feel if you look after your spots they will keep producing for you. While letting this one go, out of the darkness I heard Stevo yell and he was onto his first fish. This one was another good fish and fish of the morning at around 55cm, the tide had also turned and the sun had started to wake up. Roughly being around 6.30 we threw everything at it knowing there was probably half an hour left of our morning bite time. I was once again on to another snap then Stevo also hooked up, my fish was around 45cm but Stevo landed another nice 50cm fish. He started slow but made up for it once he changed over his hook and with some nice fish. My last 40cm fish for the morning went back being only lip hooked and now with the sun up we finished off our last baits where stevo landed another nice fish. It had been a pretty epic morning and a great start to our far north adventure - 7 in the bin and about 3-4 fish let go, so we called it time to head back to the cabin for breaky....
