Strong and rustic dog, the Romanian Carpathian Shepherd is the centuries-old partner of the Romanian shepherds from the Carpathian Mountains. It is an alpine dog, selected from an endemic breed existing in the Carpathian-Danubian area. The first breed standardization project belongs to the National Zootechnical Institute, which after four years of field research, publishes the breed standard in February 1934. According to studies, the Carpathian is a wolf-type dog, derived directly from Canis Matris Optimae, characterized by a long skull, flat forehead, narrow and long snout. It is said that he lived in the Bronze Age and is considered the ancestor of all modern shepherd dogs. In a geographical area where there is a large number of predators, the Romanian Carpathian Shepherd was formed, as a stand-alone dog breed, recognized for its role in guarding and defending herds and homes.
