Bell Ringing at Petham, Kent

The Church of All Saints in Petham, Kent, is a Grade I listed building and dates from the Norman era, with the nave dating from this time. The chancel, with it's beautiful ceiling, was built in the 13th century in the Early English style, along with the south aisle. The base of the tower also dates from the 13th century, with a belfry stage built of brick dating from 1760. The church was burnt out after a massive fire in 1922 and was subsequently restored. The tower contains the first harmonically tuned Mears and Stainbank ring of bells in the world, all cast in 1923. The tenor bell weighs 6-1-0cwt and rings out the note of Bb. All the bells are listed due to their historic importance. They sound really quite joyful, but the go isn't brilliant. They are harder to ring than they should be due to being oddstruck and having a habit of dropping randomly! Other than that, they are truly lovely bells. The practice night is shared with nearby Waltham's. I would recommend a visit - the locals are very friendly and always happy to have more ringers.
