Understanding Stress: A Kid-friendly Guide To Wellbeing - Wellness 101 Junior

Do you know how to explain what is stress to kids? No worries, we've got you covered with another Wellness 101 Junior! Have you ever felt so overloaded with homework that you are having trouble sleeping at night? Or maybe you’ve felt sick to your stomach because you’re worried about making new friends, dealing with bullies, or getting along with your teachers. That is stress my friends. Stress can do some really funky stuff to our bodies! In short…stress is what you feel when you are worried or uncomfortable about something. It’s your body’s way of responding to any kind of demand or threat. Whether it’s real or imaginary, your body’s defense system kicks in and helps you decide to fight or get away. This is commonly known as the “fight or flight” reaction or the “stress response” – it’s your body’s way of protecting you believe it or not! There are essentially two types of stress…good stress and bad stress. Good stress can actually help you – giving you extra strength to either defend yourself or help you rise to meet challenges – like studying hard to get a good grade! Bad stress on the other hand can leave you feeling frazzled and overwhelmed. You see our stress response, isn’t very good at figuring out what is a real threat and an emotional threat. So, if you are upset about a fight you had with a friend, or a test coming up in math class, your body will react just as strongly as if you’re facing a real life and death situation. And the more our stress system is activated, the easier it is to turn on and the harder it is to turn off! Now we know, childhood isn’t all fun and games my friends…and if you’re feeling stressed it’s important to get things under control. Being stressed for long periods of time can make our bodies and minds cause us to have trouble sleeping, be confused, have an upset stomach, trigger headaches, and sweat a lot just to name a few! Stress is apart of everyday life, no matter what age you are kids…but it’s how you deal with it that makes all the difference…and these simple steps should help. STEP ONE: Talk it Out If you’re feeling overloaded…one of the best things you can do is find someone you trust like a parent, grandparent, family friend or teacher and tell them how you are feeling. Sometimes just simply talking with a trusted adult, about all the stress in your life, can help you find solutions to your problems and help get all that unnecessary weight off your chest. Remember…two heads are better than one! STEP TWO: Lemon The Lemon technique is a relaxation exercise that relaxes your stiff muscles. Close your eyes and pretend you have a lemon tree in front of you. Reach up to the tree and pick a lemon with each hand. Squeeze the lemons hard to get all the juice out- squeeze, squeeze, squeeze. Throw the lemons on the floor and relax your hands. Repeat this until you have enough juice for a glass of lemonade. After your last squeeze and throw, shake out your hands to relax them. STEP THREE: Get Outside Sometimes we can be so wound up, that we feel like we are gonna crack. If this is you…do yourself a favor and get outside for some much needed exercise! Regular exercise is one of the best ways to manage stress. Try things like walking, bike-riding or playing sports for some much-needed relief. STEP FOUR: Laugh It Up There is no denying it…laughter truly is the best medicine…especially when it comes to stress. A good belly laugh can relax your entire body for up to 45 minutes! Looking at the funny side of things can put your problems into perspective and allow you to see that things may not be quite as bad as you made them out to be. Want to know the best thing about laughter…it’s contagious! So turn on a funny movie or laugh it up with some friends to get rid of some unwanted stress! *DISCLAIMER – This video does not provide medical advice!
