Jiya Jale: Stories Behind the Songs: Gulzar, Nasreen Munni Kabir & Sanjoy K. Roy Gulzar is a poet, filmmaker, lyricist and writer. Born in Jhelum, now in Pakistan, he spent his school days in Delhi and then came to Bombay, to a celebrated career in films. The poet in him flourished simultaneously; he was closely associated with the Progressive Writers Movement. Many collections of poems, short stories and scripts have flowed from his pen. His creative repertoire also includes plays, ballets, music albums, serials as well as books for children. His works have been translated into many languages and received national and international acclaim. He is a seven-time recipient of the prestigious National Award as well as 21 Filmfare Awards. He won the 2002 Sahitya Akademi Award for Best Urdu Writer and was conferred the Padma Bhushan in 2004. He was awarded the 2009 Academy Award for Best Original Song (‘Jai Ho’ in Slumdog Millionaire), the 27th Indira Gandhi National Integration Award in 2012, the Dada Saheb Phalke Award in 2013 as well as a degree of Doctor of Letters (Honoris Causa) from Rabindra Bharati, University of Kolkata in 2015. She has made over 100 TV programmes for Channel 4, including Lata in Her Own Voice, Bismillah of Benaras and The Inner/Outer World of Shah Rukh Khan. Roy, an entrepreneur of the arts, is Managing Director of Teamwork Arts, which produces over 25 highly acclaimed performing arts, visual arts and literary festivals across 40 cities including the world’s largest free literary gathering — the annual ZEE Jaipur Literature Festival. Roy, a National Award awardee for the film Shahjahanabad: The Twilight Years, is a founder trustee of Salaam Baalak Trust (SBT) working to provide support services for street and working children in the inner city of Delhi. In 2011 the White House presented SBT the US President’s Committee of Arts and Humanities Award for an International Organisation. Written over half a century of his creative ouvre, they chronicle the emotions and intuitions of successive generations and remain as markers of their times. Jiya Jale: The Stories of Songs has been written by Nasreen Munni Kabir in collaboration with Gulzar Saheb. Documentary filmmaker Kabir is the acclaimed and prolific author of several books on music and cinema. In conversation with Sanjoy K. Roy, they discuss the backstory of the music, the verses and the spirit of these songs that have become such an intrinsic part of our popular culture and heritage.
