It was unknown this version existed. Although fans are familiar with the original version from the “Blood on the Dance Floor: HIStory In The Mix” remix album in 1997, as well as from the short film of the same name, it has been revealed that “Is It Scary” (rumored to be originally titled “Is This Scary?”) was initially written and recorded in 1982-1984, during and after the Thriller sessions, but Michael was constantly dissatisfied with it. It was later reworked into this version in 1985-1986 at Westlake Recording Studios in Los Angelos for the Bad sessions, allegedly after hearing Kate Bush’s song “Running Up That Hill” on the radio in the summer of 1985. It’s believed that this was made around the same time as the original versions of “2 Bad”, “Ghosts”, and various other tracks that were considered for the Ghosts short film project, which wouldn’t be fully realized until the 90s. It’s unclear whether or not this version is completely finished. As perviously noted with songs such as “Ghosts”, “2 Bad”, etc; The song is strongly believed to have been written before and during a time where after the success of the single/music video for “Thriller”, Michael felt inspired to do dozens of spooky-genre songs, potentially for another ‘horror/scary’ short film before entering the 90s decade. During this brief time, he had written and recorded the original versions of “2 Bad”, “Is It Scary”, “Threatened”, and others which were considered to be included in the next short film and/or the soundtrack. Shortly after writing the song, he began working further on this version on & off around the summer of 1985 with Joe Kehr, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis + some members of The Rag Tag Band, and finished it in the fall of 1986, albeit begrudgingly due to being invited to a Halloween party in Los Angelos by Elizabeth Taylor the night of the final session for the song and being unable to go due to paparazzi. At the last minute, Kate Bush who had been invited to the studio by Michael to provide synthesizers, after recently liking her single “Running Up That Hill”. She did not record vocals. While the song runs over 5 minutes, the full-length version is 7 minutes long, with more adlibs, drums and instrumentation from The Rag Tag Band. It is also worth noting that you hear early beginnings of the song Bad, including with the horn parts by Barron St. & Eric Hayes. Additionally, there is no real bassline for the song per Joe’s request. Due to time constraints, the song was edited down to multiple versions, to potentially fit on a vinyl if they ever decided to put it on an album. While most of them liked this version, Michael wasn’t completely satisfied with it, as he felt there was something missing compared to past scary-themed tracks he had done. Later on, Quincy also expressed some dissatisfaction, as well as not approving Kate Bush’s influence on the track, despite Michael’s approval. Ultimately, the song was shelved, while certain elements were used for the song Bad, which would later become one of his biggest hits. //// Where should I go? What should I do?
