[SW] 7540 kHz - VOA Deewa Radio, Udon Thani - w/ a VOA Urdu programme, Sep 30 2024

Was surprised this evening to find a woman talking in Hindi or Urdu with plenty of English words interspersed on 7540 kHz. There aren't many SW stations still broadcasting to India or Pakistan in their native languages; CRI is the only major station, while others are either religious and/or don't do more than 30-minutes-long broadcasts anymore. And the BBC still has 2-4 hours of English to South Asia, but the question is, for how long? But back to 7540, this programme had eventually finished with a male anchor identifying as VOA Urdu, and giving social media directions for the service. By this time I checked the listings: it was VOA Deewa Radio, normally a Pashto-only service although aimed specifically at a Afghan-Pakistani border region. After this Urdu programme finished, the station was back to Pashto, airing nothing but 2-3 promos on a loop, including one for Azadi Media, which must have something to do with sister RFE/Radio Liberty. Finally at 18:30 UTC, a newscast (in Pashto) had started. This frequency is scheduled as 17:00-19:00 UTC. Reception here in NE Poland was excellent, with an impressively strong signal all the way from Thailand. USAGM had recently disposed of a few relay stations, but it seems others can do a pretty good job, even at an increased distance compared to the ones closed 🙂 Received at 18:20-18:31 UTC September 30th, 2024 on 7540 kHz shortwave, using Airspy HF+ Dsicovery & ~15x4.5m SuperLoop antenna.
