[MW][Remote] 792 kHz - Radio Nepal, Kathmandu - English news during deadly flooding, Sep 30 2024

Radio Nepal, the state broadcasting service in this Himalayan country, carries news in English 3 times a day, at 8am, 2pm, and 8pm local time, or 02:15, 08:15, and 14:15 UTC. This recording is of 8pm newscast on Monday September 30th, 2024, while the country was suffering major flooding & landslides caused by torrential rainfall, which claimed 209 lives so far. But despite the calamity -- and if you Google the story, you'll read reports of scenes even more terrifying than what Radio Nepal had told of -- this was not the first story in this news bulletin. Radio Nepal seems to strongly focus on government's work, and the first thing they reported on this Monday was their Prime Minister's return from a recent UN General Assembly session in Geneva. He did pledge to do more to fight climate change though. Then, after bringing information on a number of people dead, missing, and rescued, instead of talking about people "jumping from roof to roof", as written in a headline by the BBC, Radio Nepal focused on beginning to assess damage in the country. A special task force will be formed for this reason. Government, public buildings, transport, drinking water supply chain, and schools will all need to be rebuilt, but the government is ready to embrace it 🤠 After a Nepal Telecom ad (in Nepali), some international news followed, which seem to have made some trouble to read for Radio Nepal announcer. These included Hezbollah being ready for Israeli ground invasion in Lebanon despite their leader was killed, and a new Prime Minister just elected in Japan. Interestingly, before and after the news, Radio Nepal maintained a rather normal programming, including a lot of music & entertainment. The whole thing was received using a KiwiSDR in Kathmandu, over a local 100kW MW transmitter on 792 kHz mediumwave. The receiver is part of Trans World Radio network of KiwiSDRs used to monitor their broadcasts in target areas of Africa, Asia, and Central & South America.
