March 6, 2006 - Alex Ovechkin's rookie season was filled with many memorable performances, and as the season progressed it became clear that one of the greatest rookie seasons of all time was unfolding. Playing in his first home game after the Olympic break in the newly renamed Verizon Center, he was on the verge of history once again. Entering the contest with goals in 5 straight games, he sat just one shy of 40. It was a mark that hadn't been reached by a rookie since the 1992-93 season when Teemu Selanne and Eric Lindros both hit the milestone. Early in the second period, Ovechkin extended his scoring streak to 6 games becoming the 15th rookie to ever score 40 goals in a season. Ovechkin added another goal and assist to work his way closer to the even rarer rookie totals of 50 goals and 100 points, both of which he reached by the end of the season. To put in perspective how rare this feat was, so far the only rookie since 1993 other than Ovechkin to reach 40 goals was Auston Matthews who had exactly 40 in 2016-17. The Great 8 would go on to reach 40 goals 12 more times, setting the NHL's all-time record for 40-goal seasons with 13 as of 2024.
