December 23, 2008 - Heading into the final game before the 2008 Christmas break the Capitals found themselves severely shorthanded against the New York Rangers. In addition to missing Alex Semin, the Caps were without most of their starting defenseman including Mike Green. While there may have been a few extra call-ups in the lineup, they still had Alex Ovechkin. After a somewhat slow start to the season, the Great 8 was on a scoring rampage with 35 points in his last 21 games. The game did not start to great for the Caps, going down 4-0 early. Ovechkin had been on the ice for three of the goals and the rest of the game might have been his effort to make up for that. He would get the Caps on the board in the second period and assist on the goal to cut the lead to one before tying the game on a great steal and breakaway goal in the third. Washington would go on to win in overtime to complete one of their most memorable games of the 2008-09 season.
