If neither realism nor constructivism in understanding God is completely satisfying, can there be a middle ground? Ben Chicka’s book, God the Created, addresses this issue. C. S. Peirce’s theory of signs (icon, index, symbol) and theory of categories (firstness, secondness, thirdness) are discussed as a framework to better analyze a possible solution. Chicka contextualizes his view between John Cobb and Robert Neville. A brief overview of Cobb and Neville’s understanding of religion as it relates to God is presented as well as their points of agreement and disagreement. Finally, Chicka’s view of pragmatic constructive realism is elaborated as a better way of understanding God as created.
