Belly Tank Lakester | Custom Alternator Mount Ep71

I designed a laser cut steel Y shaped alternator mount. Designed in Google Sketchup which is free and has a fast learning curve then sent the files to a metal laser cutting company locally. In the end it was made in two parts welded together. One was 15mm thick and the Y part was 10mm thick. You can buy these but with shipping from the US and then import duty on top, it was cheaper to design my own on this side of the water. I decided some time ago to go to 12V and fitted a Stromberg 12V distributor. The regular 6V starter will take 12V is short bursts it seems from a lot of researching on the forums. This meant I needed to either i) Not run a generator or alternator, just have a spinning pulley there instead or ii) Fit an alternator designed to look like the original generator, which are expensive, or iii) Fit a regular alternator that is relatively easy to get hold of. A popular choice is the GM '1-wire' alternator. These are commonly used in all sorts of car conversions as they have only 1 wire to connect and everything else is inside the alternator. It was originally designed for tractors apparently before becoming popular with car builders. I went for option 3 but then you do need to make a mount for it, so more work ! Also I found out that you need to go one size up on the fan belt as the pulley is larger diameter and the alternator is not as slim as the original generator. Some useful info: All these V profile belts are 17mm wide at the top (5/8 inch)and 11mm deep. Belts of this profile size are all known as B section belts. They all have a code number that starts with a B followed by a number representing the Length. So, a B51 belt has an INSIDE edge length of 51inches and is the standard belt size for a 1932 - 1952 flathead Ford V8 with standard generator. You don't need to buy from a specialist classic vehicle supplier, they are easily available online. I tried a B53 but it was a little too long and in the end a B52 worked perfectly with the alternator.
