Canadian Classics (Season 1): Episode 4, "Cataraqui"

If you asked golfers in Ontario what they know about Kingston, golf probably isn’t the first thing on their minds. First capital of Canada; home of The Tragically Hip, Don Cherry, and Doug Gilmore (and the occasional street party). But half-way between Toronto and Montreal, Kingston has a thriving golf community, and Cataraqui is its centrepiece. Cat’s membership is strong, with past PGA Tour, USGA, NCAA, Golf Canada and Golf Ontario experience. While there are of course a number of factors at play, we are naturally biased to attribute that success partly to the terrain. Plain and simple, Cat is a smart golf course. Designed by renowned Canadian Golf architect Stanley Thompson in 1917, Cataraqui is a tricky par 70 layout that takes you back to a time when golf courses were made without the precision equipment and machinery of today. Its rolling, bumpy fairways are reminiscent of the old links courses of Scotland, and its demanding green complexes force you to hit greens at all costs. The course plays along the edge of a ridge, creating some natural barriers between holes and a good amount of elevation change given the flat topology of the region. Notably, Cataraqui has an outstanding set of par 3’s which offer a variety of challenge and excitement not often matched. Its shorter par 4s are subtly tricky, its long par 4s will test your length and precision, and its reachable par 5s keep you on your toes around the green. Cataraqui is a true gem that deserves more attention than it gets. Currently ranked #56 in Canada & #169 globally, check out photos from the Cataraqui here: https://www.preferredlie.com/courses2...
