The Clifton Hall Colliery Disaster. 1885. Pendlebury. Salford. Manchester

Clifton Hall Colliery was one of many collieries in this area of Salford, Manchester. Opening in 1820, and also known as Lums Pit, there had been, in the 1860s, strikes at the mine due to the employees feeling unsafe in their working environment. In 1885, their fears were confirmed.... A solitary candle was lit underground and, igniting with the coal dust in the air, a huge explosion happened whilst 400 men and boys were working in the mine. The explosion rocked the ground for half a mile. All eyes above ground looked to the surface bell, the hope that the bell would be rung to show everything below ground was okay....but the bell didn't ring. This video looks at the story of the 1885 Clifton Hall Colliery Disaster, before heading to another nearby Colliery ruins called Wet Earth.
