Cricket is Coming to America. We Might Finally Be Willing to Accept It

America is co-hosting with the West Indies with 16 games to be played in New York, Texas, and Florida. It is certainly quite the development for a sport that has long been dismissed as the bastard cousin of baseball. The thing is, the World Cup is only sticking its proverbial toe in the water to check the temperature. Once a T20 champion is crowned, we jump into the second season of Major League Cricket, an ambitious attempt to establish a domestic league stateside backed by billionaires and featuring rosters with prominent names such as Quinton de Kock, Glen Maxwell, and a personal favorite, Haris Rauf. A few years ago, I would have thought this idea was crazy. Now, it just might work. Maybe. Maybe. Major League Cricket has done a good job of assembling rosters that should provide entertainment. If fans start watching during the T20 World Cup, there won't be this massive drop-off when the domestic league kicks off. The reason for that is finances. Namely, Major League Cricket is being bankrolled by a pretty impressive list of investors who have pledged upwards of $1 billion to get this thing off the ground. That is billion with a b. It won't threaten MLB, but there is no reason it can't exist in the space between MLS, the WNBA, and the Premier Lacrosse League. All cricket really needs is just time, support and the chance to grow. Those things that have derailed numerous other startup sports leagues over the years don't seem as if they'll be an issue for Major League Cricket. Now, maybe I'm wrong. Maybe America will never embrace cricket. Then again, there were numerous people in Sacramento who would go on about "they should use their hands" when I tried to talk soccer in the 2000s. Now, some of those people are Sac Republic season ticket holders. All I'm saying is there is a chance for cricket to become something in America. And now is the time to find out. Between the T20 Cricket World Cup and the second season of Major League Cricket, the cricketers are coming. About The Touchback #takeitouttothe25 The Touchback is the world's best sports and culture website…or something like that. You'll either really like it or really hate it. But it's worth reading either way.
