Like us on Facebook:   / touchbackthe   Follow on X:   / touchbackthe   What do Andre Agassi, Serena Williams, Venus Williams, Anna Kournikova, John McEnroe, Martina Hingis, and Dr. Phil all have in common? They all played in a Sacramento shopping mall parking lot. Many of tennis's biggest stars turned up to Sunrise Mall in Citrus Heights over the years thanks to World Team Tennis and the Sacramento Capitals. The crowd sizes at the Sunrise Mall stadium were good even when Agassi wasn’t playing. Seating estimates varied from 2,500 to 3,200, but by and large, the Capitals drew well. Agassi stuck around for a few seasons, even getting the key to the city for his troubles, before a new marquee player would turn up. 2005 started with what the Sacramento Bee referred to as a bombshell when Anna Kournikova signed up. While she had star power, Kournikova also hadn’t appeared in a WTA Tour event for nearly two years and was basically retired and playing tennis for fun. This was not peak late career Agassi. Things began to decline for the Sacramento Capitals and World Team Tennis as a whole. Eventually, the team announced they were leaving Sunrise Mall. Not for a permanent home venue. But to go play in another shopping mall parking lot, this time at the Roseville Galleria. That mall was expanding and needed a signature feature. Tennis was one of the few proven options out there. The Sacramento Capitals and tennis's biggest stars would return to the Sacramento Mall parking lot again in 2011, but things were not the same. Meanwhile, Sunrise Mall itself was on the decline. Time had passed it by, and no one had any ideas on how to turn things around. Going back to the World Team Tennis well was an uninspired attempt to recapture lightning in a bottle. But it's worth reading either way.
