Dard received comprehensive religious education from his father, who had relinquished his position as a royal mansabdar to become a Sufi. Despite witnessing several invasions and conquests of North-west India, Dard remained keenly interested in music and held soirees of music, mastering the art to perfection. He was respected equally by the royalty and the nobility for his Sufi beliefs. Dard had mastery over Arabic, Persian, and Urdu, and his close reading of the holy Qur’an, traditions of the prophet, jurisprudence, and religious literature made their mark on his poetry. He was a renowned mystic poet in both Persian and Urdu, with a collection of ghazals and a Persian Divaan to his credit. He differentiated between two types of speech, one internal and the other verbal, and believed that a poet negotiates between external and internal speech.
