It's been an interesting year for the Chino Hills basketball program. Last year, the Huskies made it to the Open Division semifinals on the strength of the play of LiAngelo and LaMelo Ball. This off-season saw some turmoil with the arrival of new coach Dennis Latimore, and the departure of LaMelo Ball to Litunaia. It had no answer for Chino Hills’ 6-foot-9 junior forward Onyeka Okongwu and the Bulldogs were thoroughly dominated on the glass in Saturday’s CIF Southern Section Division 1 boys basketball title game in front of a packed house at Azusa Pacific University. Okongwu, who already has offers from UCLA, Kansas, Oregon, Cal and several others, finished with 38 points, 14 rebounds and three blocks to lead Chino Hills (21-11) to a 72-56 victory and its second championship in three years to go with the 2016 team that won the CIF Open Division section and state titles that featured Lonzo, LaMelo and LiAngelo Ball along with Okongwu.Pasadena (24-6), which was looking for its first championship since 2012, had three players finish in double figures led by UNLV-bound Bryce Hamilton’s 22 points to go with Tavian Percy’s 16 and Darius Brown II’s 10 points.
