GEDLING PARISH #7: BESTWOOD VILLAGE Bestwood Village – “Wooden Thicket in Rough Grass” Round seven in Gedling sees us again on the Western side of the district as we take on Bestwood Village – and the Village part of its name is important. This is why. Bestwood Village should not be confused with the Bestwood Park Estate – an area of 1930s council housing within the city of Nottingham’s Northern suburbs. Whilst that is doubtless interesting in its own right, Bestwood Village is a different animal. This place was dominated by coal mining – it is without a doubt the most obvious piece of history in a village that was industry heavy. Bestwood also had mills on the River Leen, but the part of the village they were all in, lies in Ashfield and not Gedling. That means our attention is solely focused on mining – and you cant really miss it. Literally the biggest giveaway would be the Bestwood Winding Engine which stands at the entrance to what is now a country park. It’s a unique piece of mining equipment in fact – having as it does, a twin cylinder vertical steam engine Several other mining features can be found here like the Miners Welfare, the Clocktower and the typical pit village housing. What was once a village dominated by coal is now considered a more affluent area of the Nottingham conurbation, despite a few boarded up buildings here and there.
