I hadn't realised quite how small the village was until I walked around it. Starbotton's true character comes out when viewed from above as you realise its splendid location in such an ancient and beautiful valley. Situated by the River Wharfe in Upper Wharfedale in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, Starbotton is a small village of around 60 houses in the Craven district of North Yorkshire, England. This quaint hamlet is a hidden gem in a picturesque landscape offering a tranquil retreat from the hustle and bustle of city life. With its traditional stone cottages, lush green fields, and the gentle flow of the River Wharfe passing through, Starbotton is a picture-perfect embodiment of rural England. The resident population is around 100 people and many of the village houses are now used as holiday accommodation. The village is on the opposite bank of the Wharfe to the Dales Way halfway between Kettlewell and Buckden, and following the road north through Bishopdale will lead you to Aysgarth Falls. The name Starbotton is derived from the Old English words “stir” meaning “stony” and “botm” meaning “valley bottom” and it was once a centre for lead mining, with several mines operating in the area during the 18th and 19th centuries. Since at least the Iron Age people have lived in this part of the dale with the area also criss-crossed with pack horse trails from the time when the great monasteries like Fountains Abbey, Jervaulx and Rievaulx traded wool and other goods across this part of the Pennines. The Fox and Hounds is Starbotton's only pub. The village was also used as a location in the film Calendar Girls, as is written on their village sign. Filmed on 20.04.2024 ► LIKE AND SUBSCRIBE!
