General Sherman Tree trail: hiking to the Largest Tree in the World. Sequoia National Park, CA

The General Sherman Tree is the largest tree in the world by volume! A must-see. It is definitely a tourist attraction so expect a crowd but if you are after more solitude, access to the Congress trail is available very close by so you can get up close and personal with some more giants! There is free parking and flush restrooms at the main trail head (follow road signs for Wolverton / General Sherman), handicap accessible parking and pit toilets are available at the lower trail head which becomes the main parking area in the winter. The main trail starts at about 7000' elevation and is paved with a few short sets of stairs. You will begin the trek outside of the Giant Forest grove but as you descend you will start to see the beautiful cinnamon color of the Giant Sequoias begin to appear. Your first attraction will be a view point where you can get a picture of the entire General Sherman tree (since the tree is so large there are not many places to get a photo of the whole thing!), there are benches and an interpretive sign at this view point. As you continue walking you will come to a trail convergence, turn Right to visit General Sherman, turn Left to enter the Congress trail (clearly marked with signs and a map kiosk). When you arrive at the base of General Sherman there will likely be a line of people waiting for their photo in front of it. There is a fence around the tree to protect it's delicate root system and benches available. As you continue walking you will see some awesome features such as a massive fallen Sequoia that the trail goes through, a fantastic cut cross-section of another Giant and two "twin trees" that the trail goes between.
