Brother James’ Air – Hymn – W. Bell Reed Organ

This large W. Bell reed organ has been recently restored, and in the previous videos I had demonstrated the capabilities of the full sounds and brightness that it can produce. This video has the lighter sounds, starting with a combination of a 16ft Cremona and 16ft Bourdon as the melody, accompanied by a 2ft Harp Aeoline in the Bass. The second verse adds a 8ft Celeste, with a 16ft and 8ft bass added. On the last verse, it is the grand organ – but muted by keeping the swell louvers closed. The hymn tune that I and playing is called “Brother James’ Air’, composed by James Leith Macbeth Bain, born in Scotland, c. 1840 and died in Liverpool, England, in 1925. It has a few different text settings to it, such as “The Lord's My Shepherd” and “How Lovely is Thy Dwelling-Place”. The W. Bell reed organ is a foot pumped instrument, made in Guelph, Ontario Canada in 1892.
