ADG Filler #3 - DOSBox Configuration Files

Video Originally Released: December 25th, 2010 ------------------------------------------ DOSBox is my emulator of choice for playing DOS games on modern computers, but configuring it can be a nightmare if you're not too versed in how DOS games work. This filler helps to demystify the process by explaining what exactly some of the configuration settings do, along with providing practical examples of how they affect various games. I cover the DOS command prompt in the next filler. ;) ------------------------------------------ Additional Information and Corrections: A bit of an overdue update: When I first made this video, Windows 8 and 10 weren't a thing. On a Windows 8 or 10 system, you absolutely should be setting your output mode to "OpenGL", as DirectDraw is deprecated and functions very poorly on Windows 8 and 10, leading to aliasing issues and long delays when switching display modes. Don't worry. That list of games isn't ALL of the DOS games I have, just a small selection of the ones I had installed when I made this video, though I should also point out that some of them, like Skunny Kart and Seek and Destroy, were just shareware/demo versions at the time, although I've since gotten the full versions of some of them too! :) There are of course many other settings that can be changed. If you're having trouble with a game then a good place to look for help is the DOSBox Compatibility List at http://www.dosbox.com/comp_list.php Something to keep in mind specifically with DOS games purchased as modern digital downloads is that they typically run their own instances of DOSBox. If you want to run them with your own copy of DOSBox, just treat the files installed the same way you would any other DOS game you installed manually, creating new shortcuts for them and ensuring the path values (both for the program and the "start in" folder) reference your main DOSBox installation. Alternatively, you could just adjust the config files for the installation provided, since there WILL be one or more. (GOG usually includes a primary configuration file, then additional config files to handle launching the game as single player or multiplayer.) ------------------------------------------ Pixelmusement Website: http://www.pixelships.com ADG on Pixelmusement: http://www.pixelships.com/adg Alphabetical Index of ADG Episodes: http://www.pixelships.com/adg/index2....
