Mary Chapin Carpenter - Songs From Home Episode 58: The End Of My Pirate Days

Welcome back friends to Songs From Home, episode 58… “The End Of My Pirate Days”…. We’re wishing you all a happy Valentine’s Day today from the farm, with all the chocolate, champagne, roses, poetry, cards, songs and romance you can carry. As an antidote to all that sweetness, today’s song from my 1994 album Stones In The Road traces the end of a romance, because… sad songs make us happy! The sadder the better! Even on Valentine’s Day! My friends Shawn Colvin & Gretchen Peters will back me on this. We rose and fell just like the tides He filled my heart and soul and I Buried all my dreams for someone else to find In my pirate days… I read an article recently about what it feels like to hit the pandemic “wall”. It described much of what I feel from one day to the next; some are productive and creative, I’m getting things done and looking forward with clear eyes, I’m feeling pretty ok. Then there are other days that are hollow and dark AF. The article suggested, among other things, cultivating gratitude, practicing distracting yourself (hello Great British Baking Show, hello Greta Gerwig’s “Little Women”), asking for help (not easy), eating more carbs (no problem) exercising (Angus approves), remembering that the vaccine IS coming (a challenge given the abysmal roll out, but #patienceismysuperpower) and perhaps the simple act of writing down what you’re feeling & experiencing to tamp down the noise in your head. And then there are the wise words of our dear friend Carol Noonan from the legendary Stone Mountain Arts Center who reminds us that “dogs and mashed potatoes fix everything”. Amen sister. However you are making it through, I hope you stay well, stay strong, wear your (double) mask, carry on, and always, always, always #staymighty ! #theendofmypiratedays #stonesintheroad #valentinesday #blueridgemountains #virginia #farm #home #angus #hittingthepandemicwall #souldog #patienceismysuperpower #staythefuckhome #weareallconnected #sadsongsmakemehappy
