L2 Writing and Technology: How Research Informs Teaching (Mimi Li)

New technology in the digital age has been revolutionalizing the ways of our communicate and knowledge construction, and dramatically changing the landscape of second language (L2) writing (Li & Storch, 2017). Digital technologies have impacted "the ways we write, the genres we create, the authorial identities we assume, the forms of our finished products, and the ways we engage with readers" (Hyland, 2016, p. 40). This presentation will explain multiple up-to-date research areas of second language writing and technology, including digital multimodal composing, computer-mediated collaborative writing, teachers' multimodal feedback, online peer response, automated writing evaluation, and corpus-assisted writing instruction. Regarding each area, relevant definitions and rationales, research strands, as well pedagogical suggestions will be discussed. Audience will enhance their understanding of L2 writing tasks in the digital environment and will be motivated to explore the impact of new technologies on writing processes, products, and language development through research and instructional practices.
