This is "Christmas Eve," the first episode of the 1981 Japanese animated television adaptation of "Little Women," by Louisa May Alcott. In it, the four March sisters (Jo, Meg, Beth, Amy) are given a dollar each by Aunt March as a Christmas present, after which they trudge off in the snow to the General Store to buy things they want for themselves. When they get back home they realize that the money would be better spent on something for their hard-working mother, so it's back to the store... There's a quiet, gentle tone to the pacing of the story and the interactions of the girls with each other, with their neighbors and with their aunt. There's a stark, dramatic quality in the settings and the colors, giving it almost an anime equivalent of a 19th century look. There's a poignant scene at the end where the mother prays and gives thanks for her daughters, as a tear slides down her cheek. Would an American animated version take the time for such a moment?
