GIANT KATYDIDS BITE???

The red eyed devil katydid, giant devil katydid, greater arid-land katydid, and so on all refer to Neobarrettia spinosa. These MASSIVE katydids are obligate carnivores, meaning they actively hunt down and eat other animals! Using their sensitive antennae, these six legged predators crawl through the scrub and trees of south Texas in search of anything they can overpower and eat! As adults these animals can pack a POWERFUL bite and can easily break even the toughest skin! Now that summer is in full swing, these katydids have love on the mind and take to the trees and bushes to call for females! This is the first time I've ever handled this species with my bare hands, and although it was quite unnerving, I'm glad to have done it! Luckily my fingers were spared!
