Radiation therapy, alone or in combination with chemotherapy, is the most effective treatment for certain types of brain tumors. Radiation oncologist Kathryn Beal of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center discusses the latest techniques—including stereotactic radiosurgery, intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), and image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT)—to deliver high doses of radiation directly to a tumor while sparing healthy brain tissue. {partial transcript} Thank you for having me. I’d like to review a few things today, primarily the treatment of malignant primary brain tumors, specifically high-grade gliomas and glioblastomas for which radiation is the backbone treatment following surgery. I’ll also talk a little bit about stereotactic radiosurgery, which is one of the large parts of the practice of radiation oncology for brain tumors. Also, we’ll review a little bit about technical advances, specifically the IMRT and image guidance on treatments machines for daily use. One of the first large studies in radiation oncology is the study of brain tumors and the use of radiation following surgery for patients with malignant gliomas. That said, one of the first large studies in radiation oncology was the use of radiation for malignant gliomas and glioblastomas.
