Introduction to Radiation Therapy of the Head & Neck: http://www.youtube.com/edit?video_id=... 0:00:00.500,0:00:03.000 Welcome to the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre. 0:00:03.000,0:00:05.500 This video is an introduction to radiation therapy treatment 0:00:05.500,0:00:07.300 to the head and neck area. 0:00:07.300,0:00:09.500 We hope to give you a better idea of what it will be like 0:00:09.500,0:00:11.500 to have radiation treatment and explain some of the ways 0:00:11.500,0:00:16.000 we can work together to help you get through your treatment successfully. 0:00:18.500,0:00:21.500 In the most general sense, radiation is any sort of energy 0:00:21.500,0:00:27.000 such as light, heat, or sound. 0:00:28.500,0:00:32.000 Ionizing radiation is a type of radiation that can damage cells, 0:00:32.000,0:00:35.500 such as ultraviolet light from the sun that can damage your skin, 0:00:35.500,0:00:38.000 causing sunburns. 0:00:39.500,0:00:43.000 For radiation therapy treatment we use a high-energy beam of radiation 0:00:43.000,0:00:48.500 that can penetrate through the body and treat tissues under the skin. 0:00:48.500,0:00:51.500 Ionizing radiation affects all of the tissues it passes through, 0:00:51.500,0:00:56.000 but there are 3 main ways that it specifically targets cancer cells. 0:00:56.000,0:00:01.500 First, cancer cells are more sensitive to radiation damage than healthy cells. 0:01:01.500,0:01:03.500 Secondly, cancer cells are less able than healthy cells 0:01:03.500,0:01:06.000 to repair the radiation damage. 0:01:06.000,0:01:11.500 Third, we can focus the radiation beams on the area we want to treat. 0:01:11.500,0:01:14.000 In the next part of the video, we will show and describe 0:01:14.000,0:01:18.000 some of the procedures you will have done to prepare for radiation treatment. 0:01:18.500,0:01:22.000 One of your first appointments in this department is called CT simulation. 0:01:22.000,0:01:27.500 This is a type of CT scan that is needed to create your personal treatment plan. 0:01:27.500,0:01:30.000 At this appointment, you will also have a molded mask made 0:01:30.000,0:01:32.000 that fits over your head and shoulders. 0:01:32.000,0:01:35.500 The mask will help make your treatments as quick and accurate as possible. 0:01:35.500,0:01:39.000 It is normal to feel a bit anxious about this procedure. 0:01:39.000,0:01:41.000 It may help to know that the mask does not hurt you 0:01:41.000,0:01:44.000 and you will be able to breathe normally the entire time. 0:01:44.000,0:01:48.500 The mask is a type of plastic that we soak in a warm water bath to make it soft. 0:01:48.500,0:01:51.000 Then we shape it over your face, neck and shoulders, 0:01:51.000,0:01:54.000 and clip it onto the treatment bed. 0:01:54.000,0:01:58.000 You can see here how the mask looks when it is flat. 0:01:58.500,0:02:03.000 And then after it has been shaped to fit your head and neck. 0:02:07.000,0:02:09.500 This is what it looks like when the mask is made. 0:02:09.500,0:02:12.000 It goes over your face quickly and we help shape it 0:02:12.000,0:02:14.000 around your nose, neck, and shoulders. 0:02:14.000,0:02:17.000 You'll have your eyes and mouth closed for this step, 0:02:17.000,0:02:20.000 only because there is a bit of water still on the mask. 0:02:25.500,0:02:27.500 The mask is meant to be snug but should not hurt. 0:02:27.500,0:02:31.000 You will be able to breathe through the holes in the mask. 0:02:31.000,0:02:33.500 For your treatment appointments, there will be holes in the mask 0:02:33.500,0:02:36.000 in the area of your eyes, mouth and neck, 0:02:36.000,0:02:39.000 so it should be a little bit more comfortable. 0:02:43.250,0:02:47.000 Once the mask is ready, we draw some marks on it and take the CT scan. 0:02:47.000,0:02:49.500 At the very end, we may talk to you about making 0:02:49.500,0:02:53.000 a permanent, freckle-sized tattoo on your chest. 0:02:54.750,0:02:57.500 The marks on the mask and the tattoo help make your treatment every day The information within this video is not intended to replace any advice provided to you by your health care team.
