The global demand for soy as animal feed continues to rise! This puts enormous pressure on natural areas and biodiversity in soy production regions, and global transport has a bad effect on our climate. In Denmark, at Aarhus University, researchers at the interdisciplinary research center CBIO - Centre for Circular Bioeconomy - are looking for locally grown, sustainable alternatives to soy imports for animal feed. One promising candidate is grass. In the demonstration plant of the European-funded GO-GRASS project, they are operating a small-scale biorefinery to produce protein from grass. On the one hand, the project is optimizing the biorefinery process to achieve a high yield and purity of protein for feeding pigs and poultry. On the other hand, the by-products in the form of recycled nutrients, bioenergy and biomaterials will also be further investigated.
