Only about 25 kilometers southwest of Munich is Lake Starnberg, which is also known as the "bathtub of Munich" because of its proximity to the state capital. Made famous by the mysterious death of the fairy tale king Ludwig II, the lake offers many old villas and castles like no other in Bavaria. The Starnberger See is Bavaria's second largest lake and is considered to be one of the richest in water in all of Germany. For numerous Munich residents and tourists, it is a popular destination for swimming, sports and relaxation. With a depth of up to 128 meters, it extends 21 kilometers in width and 5 kilometers in length. It is a community-free area and belongs to the Free State of Bavaria. Cities like Starnberg, Seeshaupt, Bernried, Tutzing, Feldafing and Possenhofen frame the lake. In the northern part, at the level of Feldafing, lies the rose island, which can be reached by an electric motor ferry.
