Starnberger See | Lake Starnberg | Bavaria´s Second Largest Lake | Ajay The Globetrotter

The second largest lake of Bavaria is a mere 30-minutes ride southwest of Munich and the main recreation area for Munich inhabitants. You can reach it also by S-Bahn (suburban train). The lake is around 20 kilometers long, five kilometers wide and up to 127 meters deep. It is bordered by moraine hills with higher mountains of Benediktenwand and the Wetterstein mountain range in the background. Walkers can explore the beauty of the landscape and the various sights on the path that follows long stretches of the shore. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the lake was already very popular with the Munich court. The Wittelsbach rulers built and purchased palaces here and celebrated exuberant festivities. The best way to get to know the sights at lake Starnberg is a boat trip on the lake. There is offered a grand three-hour round trip and a short northern roundtrip only including the stations Starnberg, Possenhofen, Leoni, Berg. The ticket allows you to get out at any station and continue the ride with the next ships. Ludwig II. and his cousin Sissi liked to meet on this island. As empress of Austria, she spent 24 summers in her summer residence in Feldafing (now hotel “Kaiserin Elisabeth”) - only 10 minutes away from the landing stage of the ferry boat Tutzing: Here you can visit the Guggerhof build in the 16th century and the Baroque style church St. Joseph.
