Breast Pain is called Mastalgia. There are many reasons breasts can be painful, we will discus most common causes of breast Pain. In more than 75% of people, breast pain resolves without any specific treatment. Most Common cause of mastalgia is: Cyclic Mastalgia: or Menstruation associated breast pain: – in Most Cases it is harmeless. Symptoms: Described as dull, heavy or aching. Often involves both breast. And highly correlated with menstrual cycle. begins up to 2 weeks before a period, gets worse and then goes away when the period ends. Often accompanied by breast swelling, fullness or lumpiness. Most common cause of Cyclical breast pain is fibrocystic breast changes. Mechanism how menstrual cycle affects breast is following: Female hormone, estrogen level, stimulates the ductal elements of the breast, while simultaneously, there is a decrease in progesterone stimulation of stroma. A concurrent increase in prolactin, causing increased ductal secretion, also contributes towards pain and swelling during second phase of menstrual cycle. So, Some degree of cyclical breast tenderness is normal in the menstrual cycle. 2. Breast Cancer: Some women who have pain in one or both breasts may fear breast cancer. However, breast pain is not a common symptom of cancer. Most cases of breast Cancer doesn’t cause pain at first, but It can cause pain in later stages. Breast Pain is more serious if: Unrelated to the menstrual cycle. Described as tight, burning, stabbing or aching sensation. if affects one breast, in a localized area, but may spread more diffusely across the breast. breast pain in older women is more likely to be associated with cancer. 3. Breast Pain which spreads outside breast: Pain can start in the breast tissue but spreads outside breast. Commonly it is chest muscle pain. Or arthritis which can cause pain of cartilage in the chest. Other causes of breast pain include: Injuries, Breast trauma, or sprains to the neck, shoulder or back. Medications can cause breast pain like: contraceptive pill and some antidepressants. Also hormone replacement therapy. conditions like mastitis or a breast abscess and Infections. Pregnancy. Diagnosis: First Diagnostic approach is Breast examination. If pain is localized then imagining is recommending. Ultrasound plus mammography. Treatment is dependent on underlying cause, but majority cases of breast pain goes away without any treatment. Non steroidal anti inflammatory medications are used.
