Understanding What Might Be Causing Your Breast Pain with Dr Tasha

Breast pain is a common concern among women and can cause significant anxiety, especially when considering the risk of breast cancer. However, it's important to understand that breast pain, also known as mastalgia, is usually not a sign of breast cancer. In fact, many women experience breast pain at some point in their lives, and it is often related to hormonal changes, especially during the menstrual cycle. There are two main types of breast pain: cyclic and non-cyclic. Cyclic breast pain is linked to the menstrual cycle and often occurs a week or two before your period. This type of pain is usually described as dull, heavy, or aching and tends to affect both breasts. It typically subsides once your period begins. Non-cyclic breast pain, on the other hand, is not related to the menstrual cycle and can have various causes. It may be localized in one area of the breast and is often described as a sharp or burning sensation. Breast injuries, infections (such as mastitis), and cysts are common causes of non-cyclic breast pain. Although breast pain is rarely associated with breast cancer, it is still important to be vigilant about breast health. Regular self-examinations and annual mammograms are crucial for early detection of breast cancer. If you experience persistent breast pain, changes in the breast tissue, or if the pain is accompanied by a lump, it's essential to consult a healthcare provider to rule out any serious conditions. Maintaining breast health through a balanced diet, regular exercise, and wearing a well-fitted bra can also help manage and reduce breast pain. Remember, while breast pain can be uncomfortable, understanding its causes and maintaining awareness of your breast health is key to staying proactive about your overall well-being. **** DISCLAIMER: Due to the complexities of medical conditions, individual medical advice cannot be given.
