With smaller crowds, you won’t have any problems getting tickets to the famous art galleries and museums. A drawback to a winter visit to Italy is: some smaller towns won't have much to do. Lucca is lively most of the year, but we found the town pretty much closed up in December. On the other hand, the medieval hilltop town of San Gimignano had most of its shops and many restaurants still open for visitors. December is especially beautiful, as Christmas markets open in big cities and small towns. The biggest market in Florence is outside the Santa Croce Cathedral. Christmas trees go up in the plazas of Florence, and the streets glow with lights at night. December is a festive, enjoyable time to visit!
