The Conservation of Japanese Art: Conservation of Paintings on Silk (Extended Version)

The Conservation Center for Cultural Properties at the Kyoto National Museum opened in July of 1980 as a the first publicly managed facility dedicated to safely conducting repairs and restorations on works of art and other cultural properties. The fortieth anniversary of the conservation studio’s establishment was commemorated with "Feature Exhibition Celebrating the 40th Anniversary of the Conservation Center for Cultural Properties: The Conservation of Japanese Art," an exhibition held at the museum from December 19, 2020 through January 31, 2021. This video was made to help visitors better understand the exhibition and the activities of the conservation studio. We hope that it will help you to more deeply appreciate the work that is required to maintain these irreplaceable cultural properties and preserve them for future generations. The video was produced as part of a series of projects developed by NICH in connection with the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
