Big Mountain Trail Guide - Snowbird, UT (Shortcuts below) If you’re a skier or snowboarder, you know of this place. This, is my home mountain, my home resort. Even with several to choose from in the area this one is just special to me. The scenery, the level of difficulty, of course the snow, the events, it’s just special. Today we are at Snowbird up Little Cottonwood Canyon in Salt Lake City, UT to ride the infamous Big Mountain Trail. If you’ve never heard of this trail let me give you first a bit of an introduction. The Big Mountain trail is an 8-mile downhill only, tram accessed, mountain biking trail starting at the top of Hidden Peak then descending 2,900 vertical feet back down to the Snowbird Center. It’s fast, exhausting, exhilarating, offers a variety of riding terrain like wide open straightaways, tight forested turns, wooden bridges and technical rock sections. It’s rated as an intermediate to expert trail, there is nothing overly difficult on the trail, but the distance takes it’s toll even on advanced riders. Timing wise, beginners have been known to take upwards of 2 hours to descend the Big Mountain Trail. The fastest downhill riders can do it in just under 25 minutes. My personal best time coming into today was 35 minutes. And even though it’s my first descent on it this season, I’m feeling pretty good about beating that time. Once you exit the tram you want to ride past the Mineral Basin chairlift and then cut back across the mountain from the mineral basin side. There are plenty of signs pointing you in the right direction here. Keep in mind that the top of hidden peak is usually very crowded so don’t open it up just yet. Once you get back around to the Peruvian side of the mountain, you’ll see the start of the trail, then the battle of attrition begins.
