In ancient times leading up to about the 19th century, the flags depicted such as the flags of the Safavid Empire were not national flags, but flags of the military, or of the government, or of the head of state, just to name a few. In the case of ancient Assyria or Babylonia, they had "national deities", so they were used as an alternative to a flag. Moreover, a symbol of the state such as the Tamgha for the Turkic Khaganate was used instead of a flag. Common symbols on coins were used as well, such as a lion for Lydia. These examples of symbols can be distinguished from other flags in the video because I depicted these symbols as, the symbol itself, on a white background. Flags after around 1850 tend to be national flags. Some European kingdoms were depicted with their coat of arms, such as Sweden and the Latin Empire. Keep in mind that a few symbols and flags from before the modern era shown in this video can be speculative. If a flag isn't rectangular, such as Nepal, I used white for the space outside the flag as transparency. The same goes for vexillums, such as the vexillums for the Parthian Empire, the Uyghur Khaganate, or the Liao Dynasty. For most Chinese dynasties, national flags aren't shown but rather banners to represent ruling dynasties. If there wasn't a dynastical flag, the "official color" is used. The Mongol Empire is represented with it's war tug. They also had a peace tug, but considering that the Mongols were almost, if not constantly at war throughout the entire duration of it's existence, the war tug was used. This video isn't perfect, I tried my best to it accurate.
