If the weather gets hot and you have an algae bloom, an algaecide depending on the bloom (green, yellow, or possibly black) will return the balance. If the pool is kept up, the gel-coat should last 20-25 years before having to be re-coated. Compared to concrete/gunite acid wash and re-marcite every 7-9 years. Concrete can crack and leak with the natural expansion and contraction. Fiberglass can snap if it wasn't installed properly, or you have a ground shift, but this would be on the pool contractor so make sure you get a good one!
