Fridge Tripping-Learn how to fix it-Don’t power a fridge from a GFCI, especially older ones

Adam B says: From what I read on the code (NEC 2020 210.8(A)(7) for dwelling - 210.8(B)(2) & 210.8(B)(5) for non dwelling kitchens/sinks ), in dwelling units, anything within 6 feet of a sink will still need GFCI protection (non-dwelling kitchens include this requirement along with all kitchen receptacles regardless of countertop). And that protection must be readably accessible. And moving a refrigerator is not readably accessible (even though accessible). Putting the fridge outlet downstream of a GFCI is one way to meet code when the refrigerator is within 6 feet. Another way is a dedicated GFCI breaker installed at the panel. Also to note is all basement receptacles are required to be GFCI now so basement refrigerators will still need it (dwelling units 210.8(A)(5) ). But if you are at home and further than 6 feet from a sink this is a great tip! Check other appliances also! I once had a water softener downstream of a GFCI and man was that annoying. The outlet was in a bathroom main level and the water softener was in the basement. I put a night light on that receptacle in my bathroom so I'd know if my water softener was working! When the in-house fridge outlet is connected to a GFCI outlet, if the GFCI outlet trips, the fridge turns off. Also, there is a pretty good chance that the fridge will trip the GFCI outlet as its compressor kicks on/off. Especially, when the fridge gets older. Watch this video and learn how to disconnect the fridge outlet from GFCI's control. Considering to replace the GFCI outlet is another option. Additionally, if the fridge outlet is to be connected to the line side of the GFCI outlet, ensure that there are no other outlets are connected downstream of the fridge outlet.
