Aircraft Carrier ASW Capabilities: 1963- 1987

Chuck Phillips was born in October 1928 in Chester, PA. After graduating high school in 1946, Chuck enlisted in the Army Air Force, and following basic training, he was assigned to Army Counterintelligence. He attended the Pennsylvania Military College (now Widener University) on the WWII GI Bill and received a BS in Electrical Engineering in 1953; he served in the Army Military Intelligence Reserve for 3 ¼ years while in college. Chuck worked for the Department of Defense at the Naval Air Development Center in Warminster, PA from 1953 to 1983-- one of the DOD’s most important research and development facilities. He was Project Engineer on Autopilot Control Systems for Drone Aircraft for 9 years and was Program Manager of all the Navy’s ASW Telemetry Systems for 21 years, installing systems on 17 aircraft carriers and at 5 NATO bases and ½ of the systems on LAMPS helicopters. He also worked on a NASA project and was a part-time equipment specialist for the CIA for 16 years. After retirement from NADC, he worked for United Technologies for 5 ½ years as Program Manager for Atlas and Titan Missile Telemetry Systems, and was responsible for the telemetry data system during 8 missile launches from Vandenburg AFB, CA. Both Chuck’s work at NADC and for United Technologies were high stress but rewarding parts of his life.
