Rome, Narrated Walking Tour: Renaissance and the Baroque

Castel Sant’Angelo is most theatrically approached across the Ponte Sant’Angelo, a pedestrian-only bridge adorned with silky marble statues of angels by Bernini. The castle itself is a massive brick cylinder on the banks of the Tiber that began life in AD 123 as a mausoleum for Emperor Hadrian, but was soon converted into a fortress and prison. Popes would retreat here in times of danger and, in 1527, during the Sack of Rome, goldsmith Benvenuto Cellini claimed to have defended the castle single-handed, and concealed the pope’s jewels by sewing them into his clothes. He was later accused of having stolen the gems and locked in the prison, before escaping by shinning down the 25 m (82 ft) wall on a rope of knotted sheets.
