Seeing her relatives at family get togethers enjoy playing around the campfire started this itch to learn and play guitar. We do a lot of things together especially in the winter months, so I thought it would be a nice birthday gift to buy her a guitar and teach her how to play. Most first-time guitar players and buyers are looking for something under $1,000 maybe even under $300 I had heard about Simon & Patrick before, and all I really remembered was that it was an extremely well-made guitar and it was affordable. Turns out, it’s a brand under Godin which in addition to making its own line of guitars, it has several brands under the same roof. Not long ago, you’d be hard pressed to find anything good for that price range. We are spoiled today with how many great acoustic guitars are available, but it’s worth mentioning that Godin, a Canadian acoustic manufacturing brand pioneered this offering of a quality built mid-range acoustic guitar that played great and was easy to maintain. Simon & Patrick, one of Godin's brands offered the perfect first guitar in my opinion. I’ve own enough guitars to know that a brand name isn’t always the best place to start, but I did like the idea that buying a Simon & Patrick meant that I was getting higher quality components for a cheaper price. Sometimes you end up paying a premium price when there is a well-known brand attached. The S&P Dreadnought while lesser known, still had the quality build I was looking for. Should you spend more than $300 on your first guitar? Personally, I understand why buying a cheaper guitar is a safe bet because most people try and quit, but I also think the problem might be the guitar not just the person. Learning guitar in general is tough, and cheap guitars aren’t easy to play. So, if you are looking for gift ideas or want to buy your first guitar, spend a little more and you’d be surprised as to how much better the experience is for the player. What you want to be hunting for is something easy to maintain and features some higher end build qualities that you can enjoy for years to come. Highlighted Key Features Quality control is how I define a good brand name. When these acoustic guitars started to take off, I remember a guitar tech friend who handled a lot of these and mentioned that he never sent any back to Godin for quality issues. That’s saying a lot considering part of his job was setting them up and putting them out on the floor. I would say that quality still holds true today because every time I pick up a S&P guitar, they feel great and play awesome. It’s a great price for a full body acoustic. Simon & Patrick isn’t a big name, but you are still getting big name components. Spruce top delivers excellent bright tone. For finger style picking or traditional folk style music, this guitar sounds awesome. However, if you do want a softer and warmer tone, say for rhythm guitar, they do offer these with a cedar top. The durability of this acoustic guitar is awesome. The top has a natural finish, and the back and sides are laminate. This means that you can leave it out and not stress about humidifying or keeping in a case. For my wife especially, I didn’t want to gift her a guitar that would become a chore. Reselling this acoustic guitar, in a worst-case scenario if you decided it wasn’t working out, would be easy. It will hold up over time so it’s value won’t drop by much, and all the better if you are looking a second hand or used guitar, it’s that much more of a bargain. Favorite thing The Simon & Patrick Dreadnought is just easy to live with. I love how it plays, how it sounds, and continues to stay in great condition despite not having to baby it.
