Prior to publishing my tape up review of the Hobby Boss 1/32 scale A-26B Invader on YouTube, I am posting a series of pictures of an A-26B. This example of an 8 gun nose A-26B Invader was found at the Strategic Air Command Museum located outside Omaha, Nebraska. This aircraft is in excellent condition and it has been well maintained. I spent time photographing the surface of the A-26 as most of its surface skin was Butt jointed together except in a few places were lap joints were used for additional airframe strength. The A-26 series was powered by two Pratt and Whitney R-2800 18 cylinder radial engines. The Douglas Aircraft Corporation A-26 Invader was developed as the successor to the Douglas A-20 Havoc. The first prototype A-26 Flew in 1942 and the A-26B was the production model that was introduced in both theaters of conflict (Pacific and Europe) during World War–II . The Aircraft was not well received in the Pacific theater of operations , however it found a home in Europe as a bomber and in strafing operations. After World War–II ended The B-26 Marauder was taken out of service by the US Air Force and the A-26 was re-designated as the B-26 Invader. Post war modifications include the glass nose version which provided greatly improved downward visibility. The Douglas “Invader” or Counter invader“ aircraft series served in both the Korean War and the Vietnam War. These aircraft were also used a water bombers by the US Forest Service fighting forest fires. The Movie “Always” which came out in 1989 featured an A-26 water bomber.
