It is home to the historic centre with the former city centres of Old Berlin and Old Kölln, the Brandenburg Gate, the street Unter den Linden, the Humboldt University of Berlin, the Museum Island and the Berlin TV Tower. In Mitte there are numerous institutions of the federal government, the Senate of Berlin in the Red Town Hall and the Berlin House of Representatives in the Prussian state parliament as well as numerous embassies. Until the administrative reform in 2001, the district was a separate district. This district of Mitte was merged with the district of Tiergarten and the district of Wedding to form the new district of Mitte of Berlin. The place name Mitte is always used without an article, i.e. "I live in Mitte", "We are going to Mitte". In common parlance, this usually refers to the district of Mitte, not the new district of Mitte, which was created by the merger.
