The Success (and Failure) of Metal Gear Solid's Bosses

Metal Gear Solid is a series that has generated more iconic, memorable boss encounters than almost any other game franchise. In my longest video yet, let's break down the mechanics and story of each title's encounters—from Psycho Mantis to the Cobras and beyond—and analyse why that is. Support the show on Patreon -   / writingongames   Podcast - http://anchor.fm/writingongamescast Second Channel -    / @writingongamesextra9177   --- It's rare that an action game generates a truly iconic character—the kind your mind pictures whenever you think of that title or series. What's rarer is a series like Metal Gear Solid, which through its boss rosters over the years has created not one, but many of the most iconic characters in all of video games: Psycho Mantis, Revolver Ocelot, The Boss, Volgin, Liquid Snake, Vamp, Fortune, Solidus Snake... the list goes on and on. It's also a series that, for many reasons, has seen the quality of its boss rosters significantly vary as it progressed, with enemies like the Beauty and Beast Unit in 4, or the Skulls in The Phantom Pain drawing as much avarice from fans as FOXHOUND did admiration. So what happened? Why were those early bosses so memorable? What design decisions were made along the way that resulted in such a decline? Why aren't the Cobras as resonant as I remember? Might there be something to admire about those later encounters with the Skulls? In this analysis piece, akin to my Hitman videos (and with the highly anticipated release of the remake of MGS3 found in Delta), I want to try and map a trajectory across the entire series through the lens of its boss battles specifically—from MGS to Sons of Liberty to Snake Eater to Peace Walker and beyond—as to why these characters have become so beloved for so many players. 0:00 - Intro 0:10 - Why Are Metal Gear Bosses So Iconic? 3:59 - Metal Gear Solid 23:49 - Metal Gear Solid 2 Sons of Liberty 37:22 - Metal Gear Solid 3 Snake Eater 55:32 - Metal Gear Solid 4 Guns of the Patriots 1:01:12 - Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker 1:13:57 - Metal Gear Solid V 1:23:51 - The Future of Metal Gear Solid 1:28:29 - Patreon --- Intro text animation by Isaac Holland -    / drazgames   The End parrot footage from madnesdoes -    • did you know you can kill and eat the...   The End early battle footage from SkillemCal -    • MGS3 How To Kill The End Early   Extra Vulcan Raven footage from Boss Fight Database -    • Metal Gear Solid: Raven Boss Fight   Also one of the thumbnails I'm testing is pretty clearly inspired by Thomas Flight's approach—I hope me using it for a games video doesn't read as stepping on toes too much!
